A fire broke out Saturday afternoon on the roof of the landmark Battery Maritime Building, above the private club and hotel Casa Cipriani.
Plumes of heavy, dark smoke rose from the building, the result of a fire that the FDNY said began about 3:50 p.m. in the air conditioning unit on the roof and spread to the machinery room. There were no injuries in the blaze, which took about 35 minutes to bring under control, a Fire Department spokesman said. Twelve units and 60 firefighters responded to the scene.
The ferry to Governors Island operates out of the Beaux-Arts-style terminal at 10 South Street. Ferry service was suspended until about 5 p.m.
