The Art Center is located at 81 Barclay Street in Lower Manhattan. The one-time performance will feature the creation of paper art against a backdrop of unique improvisational music. The special event is part of the ongoing Paper Reveries exhibit that opened at Shirley Fiterman Art Center this past December 10 and runs through February 7, 2015. All the events are part of the ArtAhead series, curated by American artist Kathleen Kucka. Pianist Edith Hirshtal and violinist/singer Rosemarie Hertlein will create dialogue against the beat of artist Elena Berriolo’s sewing machine, as Berriolo produces a book by sewing on paper. “When a line is drawn with a sewing machine, a beat is produced,” says Elena Berriolo, explaining the literal concepts that inspire Sewing Music Into Visual Art. “It is this beat [of the machine] that provides the link between music and visual art,” Berriolo said. Berriolo and pianist Hirshtal performed together in 2012 at Bravinlee Programs Gallery. In this upcoming performance, they welcome violinist Rosi Hertlein to the collaboration. Rosi Hertlein is a German-born, New York-based violinist, singer and composer. Her musical background is divided equally between the worlds of improvisation and contemporary classical music. An internationally recognized member of the New York music scene, she collaborated in 2012-2014 with Warren Neidich for NSA/USA- Sound As Prophesy. Edith Hirshtal is a New York-based musician who has performed throughout the United States as a piano soloist and chamber musician. Michael Kimmelman of the New York Times, after viewing Hirshtal’s Carnegie Hall debut, described her as "a pianist with something to say, and that alone makes her preferable to the majority of pianists today.” For more information, please go to: http://www.edithhirshtal.org [3] Six of Elena Berriolo’s art books are on view now in the Paper Reveries exhibit at BMCC, forming a half circle around the grand piano in Shirley Fiterman Art Center. Their work is available for sale. Proceeds benefit the BMCC Foundation Scholarship Fund. “The relationship between art and the work of the BMCC Scholarship Foundation is a ‘win-win’ for all,” says Kucka. “The Shirley Fiterman Art Center is spreading the word that contemporary art is Downtown!” The Shirley Fiterman Art Center at Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) of the City University of New York (CUNY) is dedicated to enriching the cultural life of the students, staff and faculty of BMCC, as well as that of the Lower Manhattan community and beyond.
