Art in Honor of Stonewall's 50th Anniversary

The 50th anniversary of the June 1969 Stonewall Riots will be commemorated at three Downtown venues: Soho Photo Gallery, Hal Bromm Gallery and the Museum of Jewish Heritage.

"Photography After Stonewall," at Soho Photo [1], features over 70 photographs that highlight the work of 23 artists who have developed a creative approach to LGBTQ issues.

Among the themes are body/gender/sexuality, home, family and couples, gays in the military, and AIDS.

"Fifty years ago, much of this would have been unthinkable," note the authors of "Photography After Stonewall," the accompanying catalogue published by the gallery. "Among its many accomplishments, the Stonewall riots opened up a new area for artistic expression."

The show runs from June 5 to July 29. An opening reception will be held on June 4 from 6 until 8 p.m. Soho Photo is at 15 White St.

At Hal Bromm Gallery [2], 90 West Broadway, "Honoring Stonewall" is a display of works by 25 gay artists who the gallery has exhibited throughout the past 44 years. The show is up through June 21.

"Gay Berlin: Birthplace of a Modern Identity," features Robert Beachy, author of "Gay Berlin," about pre-WWII Berlin, in conversation with Eric Marcus, founder of the Stonewall 50 Consortium and creator of the podcast "Making Gay History."
