Castle Clinton, Battery Park
Meet Mary Pickersgill (portrayed by Kim Hanley of American Historical Theatre) who in 1813 made the Star Spangled Banner that flew over Fort McHenry during the War of 1812.
Francis Scott Key would write the national anthem after seeing this flag flying in the “dawn’s early light.” The flag was commissioned by General Armistead who wanted a flag “so large that the British would have no trouble seeing it from afar.” Mary sewed two flags but it was the 42’ X 30’ flag that flew over the fort and is now preserved at the Smithsonian Institute.
