Free Admission and Family Activities at Museum of Jewish Heritage

From Feb. 16 through Feb. 25, The Museum of Jewish Heritage is offering families free admission, special tours, and hands-on workshops.

Families may use the discount code FAMILES FREE in person at the Museum’s admission desk to obtain free admission or go to mjhnyc.org [1] to reserve tickets in advance.  

Family-friendly tours are available Friday at 11 am and Sunday to Thursday at 3 pm (no reservations necessary)

Below are the two hands-on workshops for children ages 8 to 12 (advance registration recommended)

Mapping Your Family Tree: Tuesday, Feb. 21, 4 pm

At this interactive workshop presented with JewishGen, the world's leading resource for Jewish genealogy, learn how to create a family tree that represents your family’s history and tips for how to continue the search for family history clues, including conducting interviews and learning from older family members.

Illustrating Your Family’s Story: Tuesday, Feb. 20, 11 am and Thursday, Feb. 22, 2 pm

Bring a photograph that represents your family (pets included) and learn how to turn it into a watercolor or colored pencil illustration, with help of instructor Gabriel Pinto and inspiration from the new exhibit “The Number on Great-Grandpa’s Arm.” No experience required.

Families can explore several exhibitions. The newly opened special installation, The Number on Great Grandpa’s Arm, is designed to introduce Holocaust history to new generations, featuring the HBO documentary of the same name and a display of artwork created for the film. New Dimensions in Testimony℠ offers an opportunity to have a virtual conversation with a Holocaust survivor through the use of cutting edge technology.

In the Museum’s Core Exhibition, the gallery Jewish Life a Century Ago celebrates the history of Jewish life and culture before World War II. A free activity guide helps children of all backgrounds ages 7 to 11 learn how to use artifacts to explore their own family’s heritage and traditions. This free guide is at the admissions desk. The gallery The War Against the Jews is appropriate for a sixth-grade-or-beyond learning level, or after children have had an introduction to the history of the Holocaust in school.

Hours: Sunday to Tuesday 10 am – 6 pm, Wednesday and Thursday 10 am – 8 pm, Friday 10 am – 3 pm. The Museum is closed on Saturday.
