The next "Scenes Through the Cinema Lens," a free retrospective film series on the performing arts, takes place at Tribeca Performing Arts Center on Tuesday, Dec. 19, at 7:30 p.m. It celebrates the birthdays of Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonious Monk, all born in in 1917.
The next "Scenes Through the Cinema Lens," a free film retrospective series focusing on the performing arts, takes place at Tribeca Performing Arts Center on Tuesday, Dec. 19 at 7:30 p.m. This month's screening is "Happy Birthday Ella, Dizzy, and Monk," celebrating the birthdays of three great jazz artists, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, and Thelonious Monk, all of them born in 1917. The film footage documentas the musicians' youth as well as their mature moments as performers.
The series is curated and hosted by Professor Krin Gabbard, professor of Comparative Literature and English at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and author of Hotter Than That: The Trumpet, Jazz, and American Culture. Each screening is followed by a Q&A, moderated by Professor Gabbard.
