They Ran for Their School, P.S./I.S. 89

POSTED SEPTEMBER 22, 2008

Once again, the sounds of pounding sneakers and squealing children filled the Battery Park City esplanade for the annual mile-long Run for Knowledge. More than 250 sprinters, joggers and casual strollers joined in the event, a benefit for P.S./I.S. 89.

The schools’ PTAs targeted two projects for its proceeds, raised through corporate sponsorships and pledges: a new, $17,500 carpet for the library and $22,000 to replace padding in the gym. Most years the library is the sole recipient of the funds.

Carolyn Happy, the P.S. 89 PTA co-president, declined to say how much money the run raised, only that it set a record, both for corporate sponsorships and the donation of food by restaurants for the after-party at the school.

“They really stepped up to the plate this year,” she said.

Librarian Daryl Grabarek handed out medals to every participant, but it was 5th grader Dario Flores who especially earned his with a first-place finish.

“I kept my pace,” said Dario, when asked to explain his winning strategy. He also mentioned that he runs three times a week.

Near the finish line, June Cantini was beaming as she stood beside her grandson Leo, 5, who ran the course with her.

“I’m so proud of him—he can already read,” she said. “So this event kind of goes together, the running, physical fitness and knowledge.”

“It’s a very big, feel-good event,” said Happy. “Children who grow up here feel such a great sense of comfort, security and belonging to the neighborhood  that they just tear out of Wagner Park, weave through the adults  and go flying along the river.”
