Firefighters Put Out Fire In Walls Of 45 White Street
A fire broke out in the basement of 45 White Street, a newly converted 18-unit rental building, just before noon on Tuesday, May 20, drawing a quick response from nine firefighting units.
Fire In Downtown Jail
Police, Emergency Management officials, and more than twenty Fire Department units responded to a fire in the Manhattan Detention Center on Walker Street shortly before noon May 15.
Division 1 Deputy Chief James Daly, who led the Fire Department’s response, said the rubbish fire was in the prison area, but was small and started in the walls between a bathroom and showers on the ninth floor. Daly said it was likely the fire started accidentally, but that fire marshals will conduct a full investigation. Light smoke filled some parts of the jail, but no one was injured in the fire.
