Glorious Food, Wine And More At 15th Annual Taste Of Tribeca

POSTED MAY 2, 2008

Food lovers, mark your calendars. The 2008 Taste of Tribeca is coming Saturday, May 17.

Founded in 1994, the annual festival benefits Tribeca’s public schools, P.S. 150 and P.S. 234. More than 50 local restaurants will take part, serving their specialties outdoors on Duane Street between Greenwich and Hudson from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“This year we’re going after pampering our attendees,” said Wendy Chapman, one of the event’s co-chairs. “We heard back from foodies and food critics that they wanted some more luxurious options.”

With that in mind, organizers are offering a $175 single tasting ticket that entitles the bearer to a free t-shirt and a “food runner,” a high school student who will pick up the items selected and bring them to the ticket-holder’s table. There will also be a $1,200 “Grand Package,” which includes a deluxe room at the Tribeca Grand Hotel, four tastings tickets, two t-shirts, a $50 gift certificate to the Bubble Lounge and assorted other goodies.

Another new addition this year will be the “Wine Trail,” a group of wine stores in the neighborhood that will be offering tastings to Taste of Tribeca ticketholders.

For those just looking for some good food, regular tickets, entitling the purchaser to six tastings, cost $40 before May 17 at www.tasteoftribeca.org, TicketWeb at 1-866-468-7619, Barnes & Noble, 97 Warren St., Bazzini, 339 Greenwich St. and P.S. 234 and P.S. 150. Tickets are $45 the day of the event.

Most of Tribeca’s most famous restaurants will be taking part in the event; diners will also be able to taste food from restaurants that have not yet opened, including Forge and the Palm.

In addition to the culinary attractions, musical entertainment will be provided by Santarina, the Orchid Thieves, and Vinny the Stage Guy. Tribeca historian and Tribeca Trib columnist Oliver Allen will lead a two-hour walking tour of the neighborhood. And the Church Street School of Music and Art, along with Looney Lenny and his school of clowns, will staff an area just for kids.

In previous years, Taste of Tribeca has raised as much as $60,000 for each school. The money goes to arts and enrichment programs at the schools, as well as to computers. Chapman said she hopes to the event will be at least as successful this year.

Taste of Tribeca is planned by a core group of about 25 volunteers, but Chapman said that at least 350 people will be volunteering their services on the day of the event.
