Police: No one injured in latest Peppers shooting

By Matt Dunning
POSTED JUNE 6, 2008

Police responded to reports of shots fired outside an embattled Tribeca club in the early morning hours of June 2.

According to police, several residents called 911 around 4 a.m. to report the shots outside Peppers Lounge on Leonard Street. A police spokesman said witnesses reported hearing five gunshots and a lot of yelling on the street in front of the nightclub.

By the time officers arrived on the scene, the area was clear, and it appeared no one had been injured in the incident, the spokesman said.

One Leonard Street resident, who asked not to be identified, said he saw two groups of people arguing in the street moments before the shots rang out.

“I only saw the situation from my window,” the witness said. “From what I could see, the street had been completely taken over by what looked like two rival gangs facing off, or some kind of street riot.  There were people facing each other down at a distance of 10 to 30 feet, screaming at each other.”

The witness said he believed the two groups’ distance from each other suggested that several guns had been drawn during the argument.

The alleged shooting was just the latest in a string of violent incidents outside the club. In December, police responded to a pair of reported shootings in the course of two weeks. Both of those shootings also took place after 4 a.m., around the time the nightclub closes.

The club’s managers could not be reached for comment.

Neighbors have long complained about noise and rowdiness when patrons leave on Friday and Saturday nights around 4 a.m. Police say they don’t have good communication with the club’s management, and since the violence and noise have all taken place outside the club, it is difficult to pressure the owners.
