A Big Wheel Launches Free Bike Rental Program

“I want to be the first customer,” said Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver as he prepared to take a brief spin around South Street Seaport’s Pier 17 on a silver (of course) bike.

Silver was on hand for the June 13 press kickoff of “Bike Around Downtown,” a bicycle-sharing program sponsored by the Downtown Alliance that offers free two- to four-hour bike rentals. The program, funded by a $100,000 state grant sponsored by Silver, continues seven days a week through Oct 31 at the Bike and Roll kiosk in front of Pier 17.

Bike reservations, on a first-come basis, are made on-line for the following day at www.downtownny.com/bikearound.
