Acting Up

Last month, I.S. 89 afterschoolers took the stage to show their stuff. What the audience saw was an array of theater, circus, magic, filmmaking, sports and other programs run by Manhattan Youth.

Kids in the program can do just one activity or explore many different interests, says Theseus Roche, director of the afterschool, which has more than 200 children.

“Middle school is a time when kids can decide what kind of person they are: the artsy kid, the sporty kid, the quirky one who does something a little different,” Roche says.

It is also a time, he notes, when academic pressures set in, and afterschool offers welcome relief—and balance—to the kids’ education. “We’re trying to pick up the slack,” he says.
