Thief Snatches $100,000 in Jewelry from Fulton Street Shop

By Matt Dunning

A thief made off with almost $100,000 in glittery goods from a Fulton Street jeweler in Lower Manhattan early Thursday morning.

Police said the unidentified burgler cut through part of a roll-down metal gate and then smashed the glass front door of Gold Rush Jewelers at 116 Fulton St. in the early morning hours of March 4. The thief shattered several of the display cases inside the store, and stole more than 60 pieces of assorted jewelry.

Joshua Shayes, the store’s owner, declined to discuss the details of the burglary but said theft is an inherent risk in the jewelry business. He said this was the third heist in his 20 years on Fulton Street.

“It happens to every jeweler in the city,” he said, adding that he was thankful none of his employees were in the store at the time of the robbery. Shayes said he was robbed during business hours in 2003, and again in 2006.

“Just a couple of weeks ago, you had a man with a store on [Madison] shot and killed in a robbery,” Shayes said , referring to the Jan. 27 daytime robbery of a Madison Avenue jewelry store, in which an employee was shot to death by the robber.

According to police, the thief stole 69 pieces of gold and diamond-studded jewelry, including rings, chains, watches, earrings and bracelets, at a combined value of $97,000. No description of the thief has yet been released.
