CB1 Chair Menin Has Change of Heart, Will Run for Reelection
By Carl Glassman
Just a month ago, Community Board 1 chair Julie Menin told her fellow members that she would not seek reelection in June.
“In all fairness, the right thing to do is to have a person who can commit themselves full-time to the board, and after five years of chairing the board, I can’t do that,” she said in December.
But at the board’s monthly meeting Jan. 26, Menin said she had changed her mind.
The two CB1 members who appeared willing to step in as candidates, Catherine McVay Hughes and Paul Hovitz, supported her decision, she told the Trib earlier in an interview.
“Both said to run again, we’re happy with your leadership,” Menin said. “It’s very difficult, when I’m getting those kinds of comments, to blithely ignore them.”
Now the host of a television talk show, “Give and Take,” Menin said she had thought she could not handle both responsibilities. But she said others convinced her that board chairs commonly juggle full-time jobs along with their community board duties and she could, too.
Board member Roger Byrom was one of those who urged her to reconsider. "There are too many projects in the works and I think one more term would help us drive them to completion," he said. "We would all benefit if Julie found the time to do one more term."
"I encouraged her because we're going through a period of transition at the City Council level," said Ro Sheffe, another CB1 member, referring to Margaret Chin taking office this month. "It's not a good time to go through a transition at the community board, too."
