Remembering 9/11
Below is a list of some of Downtown 9/11 commemorations—at St. Paul’s Chapel (209 Broadway), Trinity Church (74 Trinity Pl.), British Memorial Garden (Hanover Square) and the Downtown Community Center (120 Warren St.)
Sept. 10, 6 p.m., until dawn, Sept. 11: St. Paul’s Chapel is open for prayer, meditation and labyrinth walks. 8:46 a.m.: The Bell of Hope is rung. 12:05–1 p.m.: At Trinity Church the Eucharist with a theme of world peace and reconciliation. 12:30–1 p.m.: At St. Paul’s Chapel, an ecumenical service followed by a musical meditation with harpist. 
Sept. 11, 12 p.m.: British Memorial Garden, ceremony and bagpipes. 8 p.m.: At Downtown Community Center, a remembrance with poetry and refreshments, and music by the Alex Levin Trio and Christa Victoria. The Rev. William Grant and Bob Townley are facilitators and Rabbi Jonathan Glass will make the closing remarks.

 

Hudson Street Plaza Party
A new temporary pedestrian plaza will be installed on Hudson Street between Chambers and Reade. To celebrate, the Friends of Bogardus Garden is throwing a party. On Sunday, Sept. 19, there will be a morning of activities for kids, including a yoga class (10:30–11 a.m.), karate and ballet (11–11:30 a.m.), a music class with jazz musician Oran Etkin (11:30 a.m.–12 p.m.) and a creative play class (12–12:30 p.m.).

Tribeca Hoedown

Washington Market Park will be the setting for square dancing, with hay, live caller and all. Produced by Friends of Washington Market Park, the free dance takes place on Sunday, Sept. 19, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The park entrance is on Greenwich Street at Reade. Washingtonmarketpark.org.

Cooking Demonstration

Amy Nelms, a nutrition counselor, will demonstrate healthy and tasty meal preparations for the whole family at the Tribeca Greenmarket, Greenwich Street between Chambers and Duane, on Saturday, Sept. 11, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. 

Free Classes for Seniors

Starting this month, the Downtown Community Center offers free programs for people 65 and older. They include open swim and lap swim, water aerobics, yoga and chair-assisted yoga. For information, 212-766-1104, manhattanouth.org, or visit the center, 120 Warren St.

Writers and Actors

Tribeca Performing Arts Center is looking for writers and actors for its annual free 12-week poetry, writing and acting workshop culminating in performances on Dec. 2 and 3. Students participate in writing exercises, theater games, improvisation, movement and ensemble work. Auditions will be held Monday, Sept. 8, and Tuesday, Sept. 9, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Call 212-220-1459 between Sept. 2 and 5 to schedule an appointment. Ask for Mario Giacalone.

BPC Block Party

The ninth annual Battery Park City block party takes place on Sunday, Sept. 12, from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the Esplanade Plaza, on the south side of North Cove. There will be music, a flea market, food, contests for bubblegum-blowing and cupcake making, carnival rides and cooking demonstrations. Health Impact of 9/11

The health effects of 9/11 and services for those affected will be the topics of the forum “Surviving and Thriving After 9/11: Addressing the Health Impact on the Community,” to be held Wednesday, Sept. 15, at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, 365 Fifth Ave., Proshansky Auditorium. Fashion’s Night Out

There will be gifts, entertainment,  food and wonderful clothing, of course,  on Sept. 10 at the annual Fashion’s Night Out. Events take place in clothing stores throughout the city. Sister Talk at the Y

Relationships between sisters can grow both deeper and more difficult with age. Deborah Tannen, author of the bestseller, “You Just Don’t Understand,” gained insights into those sibling bonds through interviews with scores of adult sisters. She will share what she learned and offer advice in a talk titled “You Were Always Mom’s Favorite: Sisters in Conversation Throughout Their Lives” at 92YTribeca on Tuesday, Sept. 14, at 1 p.m. $16. 92YTribeca.org.
