Paul and Chris Weitz, the directors of "American Pie," make
a transition to London with their adaptation of Nick Hornby's international
bestseller. In "About A Boy," Hugh Grant stars as Will, who,
with the possible exception of Cleopatra, is perhaps the most narcissistic
character ever presented onscreen. Will is a rich and irresponsible
Londoner in his thirties who, in search of available women, invents
an imaginary son and starts attending single parent meetings. In spite
of Will's machinations, and in some of the most pathetic attempts to
pick up women ever filmed, he eventually finds himself in the precarious
position of caring about someone other than himself, in the form of
Marcus, a 12-year-old boy. The charmingly unscrupulous Grant is joined
by a supporting cast, including Rachel Weisz, Toni Collette, and Nicholas
Hoult as Marcus.
