Thieves Cut Jewelry Store Security Gate in Bold Break-In

Thieves broke into Omega Jewelers, 132 Nassau St., early Thursday morning, making off with several display cases filled with gold and silver jewelry. The operation, which involved cutting the security gate and smashing the glass door, took just minutes, according to the shop’s owner.

“Whatever they saw, they broke and they took,” the owner, who did not want his name printed, said in a phone interview.

The thieves entered the store around 5:20 a.m., triggering the store’s security alarm, he said. A doorman in the building also called the police.

According to the owner, the thieves smashed four or five display cases. He was still assessing how much merchandise they made off with.

The 1st Precinct did not immediately respond to a request for more information.

Omega, which opened on Nassau Street in 2009, was closed Thursday and would likely be closed on Friday as well, the owner said.

“We will probably recover, but it is going to be tough,” he said.
