Oyster Schucking at Governors Island

Learn how to shuck an oyster like a pro, then put your skills to the test in a Shuck Off.

The "End of the Summer Shuck Off' will also feature family interactive activities, raffle prizes and live music.

The event, sponsored by The Billion Oyster Project, is to support efforts to restore the health of the city's harbor, which once had several hundred thousand oyster reefs as well as thousands of associated species.

By 1906, the Harbor had become toxic and nearly lifeless and stayed that way until the passage of the Clean Water Act in 1971. The goal of The Billion Oyster Project is to distribute one billion oysters around 100 acres of reefs by 2030. Read more about it at billionoysterproject.org.
