"Mellow Yellow" To Be Installed in Tribeca Park Next Month
Beginning next month, people walking through Tribeca Park will be greeted by a playful, bright-yellow aluminum sculpture comprised of an assortment of shapes and pieces. It is Cheryl Farber Smith’s 9-foot-high Mellow Yellow, will be on display in the triangular park, at West Broadway, Sixth Avenue and Beach Street. The six-month installation is part of a series of temporary exhibitions in parks around the city.
The six-month installation will be Smith’s first in a Lower Manhattan park. In 2007, her sculpture, Leaning Firm, was shown for nine months in Brooklyn Heights’ Columbus Park.
When given a choice of Lower Manhattan parks last fall, Smith, who fabricates her work in a Connecticut foundry, selected Tribeca Park, in part, because of a chance encounter with a child.
“I was measuring the space,” she recalled, “and this little boy asked me what I was doing and asked if he’d be able to touch it.”
According to Smith, the boy, and any other passerby, will be allowed to touch the art.
