The Ebony Hillbillies, one of the last black bluegrass string bands in the U.S., will perform at a free concert in Battery Park City this month. The event, which will include a dance caller and a square dance lesson, will take place on Saturday, May 17, 6:30 to 8 p.m., near the western end of Liberty Street.

The band—violin, banjo, mountain dulcimer, guitar, acoustic bass, washboard and percussion—is  known for its homegrown style and cross-cultural appeal, offering a blend of jazz, bluegrass, rockabilly, rock ‘n’ roll and country.

From concert-goers at Carnegie Hall to commuters in Grand Central Station, the group has performed for a wide array of audiences in New York City and around the country.
