Artist Meryl McMaster Explores Our "Second Self"

"Second Self," is a playful but compelling series of portraits by Meryl McMaster, whose theme is self-perception and constructed identity. According to McMaster, a Plains Cree member of the Siksika Nation, British and Dutch, from Ottawa, Ontario, her work explores "questions of how we construct our sense of self through lineage, history and culture." She incorporates other artistic media into her photographs, including props and sculptural garments. According to McMaster, "identity and subjectivity as something that is never complete, but always in process and invariably formed from within."
