City Announces Downtown Street Closures for 9/11
The New York City Police Department on Sept. 9 announced several street closures Downtown for Sept. 11, when the city will host a series of events at the World Trade Center site and in Battery Park commemorating the terrorist attack and honoring victims and rescue workers. (Posted Sept 9)

Tenant Injured in Battery Park City Building Fire
A resident of the Tribeca Pointe apartment building in northern Battery Park City was severely injured by a fire in his 30th-floor apartment in the early afternoon of Sept. 24. (Posted Sept 24)

Homeless Coalition Move Raises Fears
Seeking more space for its staff, the Coalition for the Homeless plans to move its main offices from 89 Chambers St., where it has been for the past nine years, to the corner of Fulton and Nassau streets. Some of the organization’s future neighbors say they’re concerned about the potential impact on the community, but the Coalition assures them that the fears are misplaced. (Posted Sept 3)

Fore! Giant Golf Ball Might Land In Tribeca
Bob Townley, the man who brought beach volleyball, Boca Burgers and a 40-foot-long iguana to Tribeca’s Pier 25, has another big idea for the waterfront: A giant golf ball. But not everyone shares his enthusiasm. (Posted Sept 3)


If Townley gets his giant golf ball for Pier 25, Tribeca might consider it a gift from heaven, based on the stories they tell in Texas about the orb. (Posted Sept 3)

125 Cedar St. ‘Family’ Dispersed But United
Nearly all of the thousands of Downtown residents displaced on Sept. 11 returned, or had a chance to, months ago. But for the residetns of 125 Cedar Street, across the street from the World Trade Center site, the quest to go home seems to never end. (Posted Sept 3)

Bar Owners Weigh in On Smoking Ban Plan
Mayor Bloomberg recently proposed tough anti-smoking laws that would ban smoking in almost all workplaces, including bars and restaurants of all sizes, sidewalk cafes, pool halls and bowling alleys. The Trib asked owners and employees of local bars and restaurants what they thought of the proposed smoking ban and how it might affect their business. (Posted Sept 3)

CB1 Seizes Chance for Community Center
With so much money and attention being showered on Lower Manhattan’s redevelopment, Community Board 1 is moving aggressively to turn its longtime dream—a large community center—into a reality. Over the summer, the YMCA of Greater New York, the 92nd Street Y and the Educational Alliance formally expressed interest in developing such a project Downtown. (Posted Sept 3)

Landmarks to Consider Widening Historic District
The Landmarks Preservation Commission may expand its protection of Tribeca architecture.
On Oct. 1, the Landmarks Preservation Commissoin will hold a public hearing on extending the Tribeca South Historic District to include 27 buildings on Chambers, Murray and Warren streets, between West Broadway and Church Street.

Community Stymied Again in Effort to Rezone Seaport Area
