But the park is undergoing another important transition as well. On Oct., 17, 18 and 19, the Park’s Board of Director holds its annual elections. It will hardly be a heated race, as there are six candidates running for six openings. Nevertheless, Andy Freireich, the board’s outgoing president, said a good turnout is important to the park. “We can’t fight for funding, or control or programs if we can’t prove that we’re a legitimate organization, and the way we do that is getting participation in our board and our functions.” The park board plans events such as the holiday celebrations, summer concerts, Lady Bug Day and the annual puppet festival. It also oversees the tennis court and, with the Parks Department, helps to set park policy. Voting is at the Greenwich Street park entrance on Thursday and Friday, Oct. 17 and 18, 8 to 10 a.m. and 3 to 5 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The candidates include: Fraya Berg, mother of a five-year old and the board’s secretary, who has been involved in planning special events; Damon Brandt, tennis player on the park’s court and father of two, ages two and seven; Harriet Grimm, park gardener and volunteer and mother of a four-year-old; and Sheila Kavanagh, current board member and long-time Tribeca resident who has run the park concerts and other events for many years; Dorit Matthews, formerly with the Tribeca Partnership and Tribeca Family Festival with experience in fundraising; and Steve Rossi, a Battery Park City resident with children 8 and 10 who has sat on the former Park Maintenance Corp., which oversaw capital spending in the park. Tweed Courthouse A contingent of Downtown community leaders, led by city Councilman Alan Gerson, called on Mayor Bloomberg to open at least part of Tweed Courthouse for public use at a Sept. 23 press conference on the building’s steps. Former mayor Giuliani had planned to bring the Museum of the City of New York into the building, which recently underwent an $89 million renovation, but Bloombeg nixed that deal, instead moving in the Department of Education. The museum last month hired a new director, Susan Henshaw Jones, who reiterated the institution’s desire to establish a presence Downtown. Glee Club, Anyone? Youth Fair a Success About 300 Downtown parents came together with 30 local groups and small businesses that provide programs for kids at a youth fair on Sept. 20 organized by Community Board 1. “It was an unequivocal success,” said Paul Hovitz, chair of CB1’s Yuoth and Education Committee, echoing reactions by many participants. “An incredible amount of networking went on.” Hovitz said the board hopes to organize similar fairs twice a year, with the next one in the spring.
