In the pursuit of a better Lower Manhattan and an evening of formal fun, more than 300 guests filled the ballroom of the Regent Wall Street Oct. 9 for "Dare to Dream," a benefit for Community Board 1. The gala was thrown by CB1’s fundraising arm, Friends of Community Board 1.

"Community Builder" awards went to Jane Rosenthal, co-founder with Robert De Niro of Tribeca Entertainment, James Ortenzio, chair of the Hudson River Prk Trust, The Alliance for Downtown New York and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Downtown Alliance president Carl Weisbrod and former Port Authority real estate director Cherrie Nanninga accepted for their organizations.

Judy Duffy, the board’s assistant district manager, said that the event, spearheaded by CB1 chair Madelyn Wils (who doubles as president of Friends of CB1), raised about $100, 000 and, among its benefits, would allow the board to retain two employees for another year. The board, she said, will be able to continue to update and improve its website and create a map showing many neighborhood amenities.

"We’re very happy with it," Duffy said of the fundraiser, which included entertainment by the Chinese Folk Dance Company, David Parsons Dance, Paul Taylor Dance Company and the comedienne Reno . "We’re grateful to the local community for its support."
