"Drive-In" Movies on Pier 25
There were no cars allowed, the flashing marquee wasn't quite regulation size, and making out was kept to a minimum. But the big outdoor screen and giant, open-air sound on Pier 25 gave the Tribeca Film Festival's three days of al fresco screenings ("When Harry Met Sally," "Diner," and "Grease") an authentic touch. The drive-in marquee, though smaller than the real thing, was a beckoning presence to anyone traveling down West Street.
Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal starred in the first night's offering, "When Harry Met Sally."
The sponsor of the event, General Motors, provided vintge cars from the '50s, like this Corvette.

Opening of "Death of a Dynasty"

It was the world of hip hop that turned out at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center for "Death of a Dynasty," the festival's second red carpet premiere. The hip hop satire, by Roc-A-Fella Records chief Damon Dash, includes cameos by the likes of Jay Z, Carson Daly, and Run-DMC, but it was aspiring Philadelphia actor Hanif Mohammad who made the next day's headlines, when police arrested him for carrying what they say was a 357 magnum pistol while waiiting in line for the premiere.

Opening Ceremonies

Part of the pizzazz of the Tribeca Film Festival are the celebrity mugfests at major premieres. On Tuesday, May 6, "Down with Love" premiered at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center and was followed by a party at the Winter Garden.
