| BPC Gardens Destroyed for Bridge In January, the Battery Park City Authority estimated that only a handful of plots would be uprooted to make way for the bridge, and said alternate gardening space could probably be found. Subsequently, based on talks with the Authority and the BPC Parks Conservancy, the gardeners believed that 10 or 12 would be lost, said Kathy Gupta, whose plot, which she had tended since the gardens founding in 1991, was destroyed. Gardeners moved many plants and bulbs to plots they thought were safe. "When the bulldozers came, we found out they were not safe," Gupta said. "Now our worry is, will the plots be replaced? Given that the outcome has been so different from what was presented over the past few months, were concerned that that commitment will not be kept either." Gupta said the gardens have "special meaning" this year. "Its important for peoples mental health. So the loss is very, very discouraging." Tim Carey, the Battery Park City Authoritys president, said the 15 plots that were uprooted were the same number as had been estimated. He also said that some plots were dug up in order to construct the bridges footing, but would be filled in with dirt after the bridge is completed this month. |
