Switzer Leaving P.S. 234 for Tweed

Anna Switzer announced last month that she is leaving P.S. 234, the school she has led for 11 years.

The principal will be the director of the Tweed Academy, a small school in the Tweed Courthouse that will provide two-week “residencies” in reading, writing and social studies to rotating classes of third and seventh graders from schools around the city. The academy will be housed within the Department of Education’s headquarters in the immaculately restored landmark on Chambers Street, behind City Hall.

“It’s never easy to leave a place you love so much,” Switzer said of her Tribeca school, where she began as an assistant principal in 1986. But she called her new position “the perfect place for me to go. It keeps me Downtown, it keeps me in a school with kids and it enables me to do the work I’m passionate about: social studies and curriculum.

Switzer, whose successor is yet to be named, said she expects the first residency to begin in late spring, when she will begin to split her time between the two jobs.

With many of the “essential ingredients in place,” the principal said that she is not concerned about her old school’s future, “Change is a good thing for every community,” she said, “and 234 can stand by itself.”

Historic District Extension

The City Planning Commission last month approved an extension to the Tribeca South Historic District. The extension, which includes 28 buildings on Chambers, Warren and Murray streets between Church Street and West Broadway, was supported by the city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission and Community Board 1. But at a December hearing, several City Planning commissioners had questioned its timing and appropriateness. The City Council is expected to approve the extension

Vendors will sell a wide variety of items, including crafts, jewelry, children’s toys and games, used children’s clothing and used books.

The school’s orchestra will perform, along with singer and pianist Roy Bailey. Salads, pasta, hot dogs, baked goods and other treats will be available.
