'TOAST' to Tribeca Artists

POSTED MARCH 30, 2007

Local artists will open their studio doors this month for a free, self-guided tour called TOAST (Tribeca Studio Artist Tour). Visitors can hobnob with more than 100 local artists, see the spaces they work in, and have refreshments.
The do-it-yourself appeal of the volunteer and artist-run
event, now in its 11th year, is part of its draw, says Regina Silvers, an artist and one of TOAST's founders.

“TOAST has a relaxed, very convivial attitude as opposed to the formality of a gallery,” she says. “People get to see artists in their own studios, with their materials and works in progress.”

C.J. Collins, an abstract painter on Leonard Street, also helped found TOAST. “It’s a very enriching exposure to the neighborhood,” she says. “Conversation is a really productive part of it, and it’s casual enough that people can ask questions.”

As many as 1,000 visitors go on the tours, including art dealers and potential patrons.

“I’ve made lots of new connections and friends from the sometimes surprising parade of people that come through,” says Collins.

Studios and local galleries will be open on April 27 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and on April 28, 29, and 30 from 1 to 6 p.m. Balloons hang outside buildings with open studios; maps can be downloaded from www.toastartwalk.com.
