Plaza North following the announcement of a deal between their
tenant association and their landlord, Laurence Gluck. In short,
they could afford to keep their homes.

Downtown residents at a public hearing last month to address
concerns about a proposed 35-story tower planned for a lot behind
P.S. 234 had a chance to speak, the plans fell to the floor.
The audience burst into applause, gleeful over even this symbolic
downfall of a project that, at least in its present configuration,
they vehemently oppose.

| 50-Story Tower Will Go Up Next to Hospital |
A 50-story residential tower, to be designed by renowned
architect Frank Gehry, is planned for the parking lot of NYU Downtown
Hospital. The lower floors are expected to house retail stores and
a 10,000-square-foot outpatient center for the hospital. Other floors
may be the new home for Pace University's business school and student
dorms.

Kyle Wittels boasts an admirable
stewardship of his co-op at 35 White Street. But in a special
election last month, after only three months of service, Wittels'
neighbors dumped him for the previous president and he claims
to know why. "The only reason I can think of is because

him," declared Oz Hanley, a grateful parent and one of
more than 90 people who gathered on March 27 at the Manhattan
Youth Community Center to honor 28-year-old Lamont Williams'
service to thousands of children in the organization's Downtown
Basketball League and P.S. 234 after-school program.

Carol Willis is no stranger to concrete and steel. The architectural
historian has made the study of skyscraper construction her
life's calling. But it wasn't until she watched workers convert
5,800 square feet of space into a home for her Skyscraper
Museum that she developed her fullest appreciation of the
process.
